Hello! I was wondering if any of you would be willing to share what some of your stims are, if you happen to stim. I don’t hear people talk about their stims much online, but it interests me how different people stim! Some of mine are snapping, repeating the same phrase over and over again (ex; “Thanks a lot rachel” and “yes, yes, the tiger is out”), pressing on my finger and toenails, cracking my knuckles, pacing, just making random (usually loud) noises, and some other stuff that I can’t think of right now. Yeah that’s all ![]()

I should probably be doing homework right now, but instead I’m posting this. Oh the ironyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Sometimes I flap my hands, but for whatever reason (when I’m alone) I meow quite a bit, and the thing I do the most is shake either of my legs; Like a lot. A lot a lot of shaking.
I keep singing stuff only saying “meow” or “mew” when I’m just standing there. Yeah, that’s a stim- :0 and I also start spinning loll
Edit: and I always shake my legs when I’m sitting ![]()
Ooooooooo!! Okay, so I bounce my right leg (my parents have actually asked me what I’m worried about before because these associate bouncy-leg with anxiety), I crack my knuckles, flappy hands, I have about 15 little colored glass rocks (the kind that go in fishbowls) that I sort by color, especially when I’m anxious or upset (I called them my ‘comfort rocks’ when I was little) and a worry stone that I flip between my fingers. I also spin a pen, a specific pen, in a specific way. I also have an earbud case that closes magnetically and makes a snapping sound when it closes, so open and close it a lot.
Oops sorry for how much I typed
Wait this isn’t a stim but since Helen said comfort rocks I’m gonna talk about my comfort blanket
I have a comfort blanket. It has like blanket material on one side and fake fur on the other side and it’s very warm and it’s my comfort blanket
Ok that’s all
Hand flappies
Leg bouncing
Repetitive words (ex: “potato”, “beebs”, “gay”) and/or sounds (ex: “babababababababa”)
”squeaking”
Cracking of thyne fingers (it wasn’t originally but it became one over time)
Wow I’m realizing I have a lot of the same stims as you all! (i forgot that I also do the leg bouncing and hand flapping, but the hand flapping doesnt happen that often unless im really excited or find something really funny)
I have things like that : I move my legs a lot when sitting, in fact I can’t stay in the same position more than a few minutes ![]()
I tap my nails on the table, I can move back and forth a little too sometimes
(Btw I have giftedness, considering it a neurodivergency is in debate I guess, but it can be annoying sometimes, I can be easily overwhelmed thinking of a lot of things all at once and even having trouble to sleep because of that)
Edit : and fidgets also work well, and in class I’m pretty much always playing with my pens
Out of curiosity, do you guys stim because “Oh my god I NEED TO MOVE I can’t sit still anymore” or do you stim because “Oh it’s just relaxing” or something else?
For me it’s both ! But mostly with anxiety or the need to move.
Idk. For me it’s more of either “big emotion, time to shriek” way, or in a “random jolt of energy that can only be released by snapping my fingers or clicking my tongue” kind of way
@BoHere I also have a comfort blanket, I love the texture of it!
I stim probably because of anxiety (sometimes) and just because I need to m o v e
Also, I guess I should say that I have ADHD, which is why I stim. Partially due to poor emotional regulation causing me to get too excited (sometimes I stim too hard and accidentally throw my phone lol), and partially due to the generally hyperactivity that comes from the disorder.
I don’t know if it counts, since I am unsure about if I am neurotypical or not, but here they are:
Rocking, swaying (a big one)
Leg bouncing, wiggling or rubbing of feet together
Bounciness
Biting nail (a big one)
That’s it. Again, idk if it counts.
@Rainyve Sometimes I’d like I could just turn my brain off, but at the same time when it does accidentally it feels empty and weird (and scary as well) ![]()
@Cadbiza Anybody can stim, regardless of whether they are neurotypical or neurodivergent, so all of your stims are 100% valid. Stimming just tends to be more prominent within neurodivergency
@Cadbiza I think it counts, I don’t think stimming is specific for neurodivergent people (ofc a lot neurodivergent people do that)
Im autistic and some of my stims are cracking my knuckles, flappy hands, leg bouncy thing, finger tapping, hitting head, clicking tongue, shaking my head (usually slowly), tapping my jaw/cheeks, spinning around, swaying/rocking, when im listening to music ill do what i call piano fingers which is basically tapping the air to the music, various echolalia, etc :))
I have a comfort plushie. She’s a monkey named Poochie and I got her when I was 3 as a gift from my neighbor
